Forecasting the weather for school closures is not an easy task. Lyon County School District officials put a lot of effort into making a decision when determining whether to keep schools on schedule, start late, or close schools due to inclement weather conditions. Each time a decision has to be made, many different interests and issues are taken into consideration; the primary decision factor, however, is student safety.
Weather conditions occurring after students are already in school is another decision that the district officials put a lot of effort into when determining whether to send students home early. Again student safety is our main concern and even more factors have to be taken into consideration, especially since we would be sending some students to an empty home.
We understand your concerns as a parent and if you wish to pick up your child early due to inclement weather this is your right. Please understand though that your child’s safety comes first and if the schools for example are in a drop & cover condition then we cannot allow any student to be removed from the premises. Also dependent upon the weather conditions, doors may be locked for the student and employee’s safety.
If the decision is made to delay or close school, our district will make every effort available to notify you as soon as possible. The School Messenger® system will call the telephone numbers on record in Infinite Campus® and an email will be sent to addresses in the Parent Distribution Lists. In addition, these media outlets are notified:
- WAVJ, 104.9 FM
- WKYQ, 93.3 FM
- WDDJ, 96.9 FM
- WKDZ, 106.5 FM
School Messenger® is a Notification Service System used by the nation’s leading school systems to connect with parents, students and staff through voice, SMS text and email messages. School closings, student absences and surveys are a few of the services provided by School Messenger. Up to four (4) numbers can be added to each contact.
